Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with Batik Air and the Langkawi Development Authority, has announced the launch of Batik Air’s new direct route linking Tashkent with Langkawi. This development marks an important step in strengthening international connectivity and improving access to one of Malaysia’s most iconic destinations, the Langkawi archipelago, renowned for its natural beauty and warm hospitality.
The inaugural flight, OD756, operated using a Boeing 737 MAX, arrived at Langkawi International Airport at 9.55 a.m. carrying 152 passengers. The arrival officially inaugurated a new weekly service connecting Uzbekistan and Malaysia, offering travellers from Central Asia a more seamless and convenient gateway to Malaysia’s tropical attractions.
Visitor arrivals from Uzbekistan have shown encouraging growth, with 12,655 visitors recorded between January and August 2025. The introduction of this direct air link is expected to further increase arrivals from this emerging market while strengthening Malaysia’s international connectivity. Beyond tourism, the route also opens up opportunities for trade, investment and cultural exchange, supporting deeper engagement between Uzbekistan and Malaysia.
Mr Mohd Akbal Setia, Head of the Secretariat for Visit Malaysia 2026, representing the Director General of Tourism Malaysia, described the launch of the Tashkent–Langkawi route as an exciting milestone. He noted that the new connectivity enhances Malaysia’s appeal among long-haul travellers and reinforces the country’s visibility and competitiveness within the Central Asia market, particularly as Visit Malaysia 2026 approaches.
The welcoming ceremony, jointly organised with the Langkawi Development Authority, reflected Malaysia’s signature hospitality. Arriving passengers were greeted with traditional music performances and cultural showcases that highlighted the nation’s rich heritage. Tourism Malaysia also presented curated souvenirs to commemorate the inaugural flight and provide visitors with a meaningful introduction to Malaysian culture.
With the support of the Langkawi Development Authority, Kedah Tourism and key industry stakeholders, Tourism Malaysia continues to focus on building strategic partnerships with both domestic and international airlines. These collaborations are aimed at strengthening promotional efforts and expanding Malaysia’s global tourism footprint.
The launch of the Tashkent–Langkawi route serves as an important lead-up to the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which will commence in less than a month. The campaign carries two primary objectives: attracting 47 million international visitors and encouraging a significant increase in domestic travel. Together, these goals form a comprehensive strategic framework to support the long-term growth and resilience of Malaysia’s tourism industry.
