MIFFest 2026 Announces 65-Film Line-Up and Honours Lee Chang-dong with Lifetime Achievement Recognition

The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) is set to return for its ninth edition from 18 to 25 July 2026, reaffirming its position as one of Southeast Asia’s leading platforms for global cinematic exchange. This year’s festival embraces the theme “Resonance,” presenting an extraordinary lineup of 65 films from 35 countries and regions in 27 languages, reflecting the diversity of voices, cultures, and stories that define contemporary world cinema.

More than just a film festival, MIFFest continues to serve as a bridge between cultures, offering audiences an opportunity to experience stories that transcend borders and spark meaningful conversations. The 2026 programme features an impressive collection of premieres, including world, international, Asian, Southeast Asian, and Malaysian premieres, underscoring the festival’s commitment to bringing fresh and compelling works to local audiences.

Opening the festival is the world premiere of Malaysian feature film BAGA: Tomorrow Belongs To No One, directed by Ariff Zulkarnain. Set in a fishing village in Kuala Terengganu, the film explores themes of hope, survival, and personal struggle through the story of a couple navigating unexpected challenges. Closing the festival is Yellow Letters, the latest acclaimed drama by award-winning filmmaker İlker Çatak, a powerful exploration of artistic freedom and resilience.

MIFFest 2026 also continues to champion cinematic diversity through its signature sections, including A-Lister, Neon, Manifesto, and Malaysian Dispatch. These programmes showcase works from established auteurs, emerging talents, documentary filmmakers, and local storytellers, creating a dynamic platform for artistic discovery and cultural exchange.

New and returning programme highlights further enrich this year’s edition. From ASEAN On Screen and New Rhythms of Indian Cinema to the debut of Korean Cinema: A Culture in Motion and Russian Film Week, audiences can embark on a cinematic journey spanning multiple continents and perspectives. The festival also celebrates Hong Kong cinema through its long-running Hong Kong Cinema in Flux programme, highlighting the evolution of one of Asia’s most influential film industries.

Beyond film screenings, festival-goers can look forward to masterclasses, forums, and panel discussions featuring filmmakers and industry leaders from around the world. Together, these events reinforce MIFFest’s mission to foster dialogue, creativity, and collaboration within the global film community.

As audiences gather once again to celebrate the magic of storytelling, MIFFest 2026 promises a week of unforgettable cinematic experiences that highlight the universal power of film to connect people, cultures, and ideas.
