Property Ownership Remains a Key Life Goal for Malaysians

Homeownership aspirations remain strong among Malaysians, with 56 percent planning to purchase a property within the next two years, according to the H1 2026 Consumer Sentiment Study by PropertyGuru and iProperty.

Malaysia continues to be a nation of homeowners, with a large portion of the population already owning property. Homeownership is most common among individuals aged 40 and above, married couples with children, and those in the mid to higher income segments. This reflects how property ownership is often tied to major life stages and long-term financial stability.

Owning a home is widely seen as a symbol of stability and family security. Many Malaysians adopt a buy-and-hold approach, where properties are kept within the family and passed down through generations.

The study also highlights sustained interest among potential first-time buyers. Among Malaysians who do not yet own property, more than half consider owning their first home a key life milestone.

Vic Sithasanan, Managing Director for Malaysia at PropertyGuru and iProperty, said the findings reflect strong confidence in property ownership among Malaysians.

He noted that owning a home continues to represent stability, security, and the foundation of family life. He also observed that a new generation of property seekers is becoming more informed and intentional in their housing decisions.

Trust and transparency remain crucial in property decisions. Malaysians indicated that clear images, detailed descriptions, and accurate information significantly boost confidence when evaluating property listings online.

Sithasanan added that PropertyGuru and iProperty aim to guide Malaysians throughout their property journey by providing trusted insights, transparency, and digital tools to support confident decision-making.

Through their platforms, both companies continue to empower users with data-driven insights, verified property information, and tools to help navigate a constantly evolving property market.
