Showcasing the Latest Innovations in Sony’s Cinema Line
One of the key highlights of Sony’s participation at EnergaCamerimage 2024 is the unveiling of the latest updates to its Cinema Line cameras, which include several important upgrades and new features designed to enhance the capabilities of filmmakers and DoPs.
VENICE 2 Version 4.0
The VENICE 2 has become a preferred camera for cinematographers worldwide, and with the release of Version 4.0 in August 2025, Sony continues to enhance this industry-leading camera. The new firmware introduces the EL Zone System™, developed by the legendary cinematographer Ed Lachman, ASC, who will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s festival. The EL Zone System™ provides a simplified method of exposure reading by displaying exposure values in stops instead of the standard IRE values, making it easier for operators to manage exposure.
Additionally, Version 4.0 will introduce the ability to display frame lines in different colors based on user feedback, enhancing shooting flexibility for different formats and purposes. Looking ahead, Sony plans to continue evolving the VENICE 2 with Version 5.0 in 2026 and Version 6.0 in 2027, ensuring the camera’s relevance and shelf life for years to come.
FX6 Version 6.0
Scheduled for release in *February 2026*, the upcoming upgrade to the FX6 will feature a new “BIG6” simple UI, inspired by the user interface of Sony’s flagship CineAlta cameras such as VENICE and BURANO. This new UI will provide filmmakers with a streamlined method to check and adjust key settings, promoting consistency across different camera models. The upgrade will also include a new black frame in the out monitor, making it easier to see on-screen display (OSD) information clearly. Furthermore, the FX6 will support SDI RAW Output for Blackmagic RAW recording with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist recorder, expanding its versatility for high-end production needs.
FX3 Version 7.0 and FX30 Version 6.0
Both the FX3 and FX30 will also receive significant firmware updates starting in *September 2025*, which will focus on aligning the user experience and operational features across Sony’s entire Cinema Line. These updates will introduce a new “BIG6” simple UI, along with a crucial addition for cinematographers: anamorphic de-squeeze 1.5x. This feature addresses the rising popularity of anamorphic lenses and provides filmmakers with more flexibility in lens selection for their projects. The firmware will also enable HDMI RAW Output for Blackmagic RAW recording with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist recorders.
In addition to these updates, BURANO Version 2.0 will be showcased for the first time at EnergaCamerimage, with new features such as updated recording formats, a new 1.8x anamorphic de-squeeze, and improved monitoring capabilities. The BURANO is a versatile, compact full-frame 8K cinema camera that has become particularly popular among single-camera operators and small crews.
