Tourism Malaysia marked an important milestone with the launch of Firefly’s first direct flight from Siem Reap to Kuala Lumpur, a move that strengthens regional connectivity and deepens tourism ties between Cambodia and Malaysia.
The inaugural flight touched down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1, officially opening this seamless travel link between the two destinations. Operated using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 seats, the route will run three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays starting 27 November 2025.
This new service highlights a shared commitment to expanding mutual travel and business opportunities. It is expected to boost visitor movement between both nations while supporting deeper cultural exchange and economic activity.
Tourism Malaysia continues to work with international airlines to enhance travel accessibility and stimulate tourism demand from Southeast Asia. These partnerships align with Malaysia’s goal of welcoming 47 million international visitors for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
As part of the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), Firefly’s expansion reinforces the Group’s mission to strengthen national aviation connectivity. Backed by MAG’s integrated aviation network, this new route further supports national initiatives to enhance air access and drive tourism growth.
Firefly’s Chief Operating Officer, Captain Hamdan Che Ismail, said the Siem Reap–Kuala Lumpur service represents a key step forward in preparing for VM2026. He emphasised the airline’s dedication to providing seamless, reliable, and value-driven travel experiences while connecting passengers to heritage-rich destinations.
In 2024, Malaysia received 77,342 visitors from Cambodia. From January to August 2025 alone, arrivals reached 43,799, reflecting a steady upward trend in outbound travel from Cambodia. Currently, 42 direct flights operate weekly between both countries, offering more than 7,205 seats and highlighting growing air connectivity.
From January to August 2025, Malaysia recorded 28.2 million international visitor arrivals, marking a 14.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This positive growth underscores the country’s strong appeal, driven by vibrant cities, diverse gastronomy, serene islands, and culturally rich heritage destinations.
