The group KLP48, the newly launched Kuala Lumpur-based sister group of Japan’s iconic AKB48, has officially unveiled its first-generation members, marking a significant milestone in the world of idols. After an intense audition process that saw thousands of hopefuls vying for a spot, the final lineup was carefully selected following three months of rigorous training under 48 Entertainment Sdn Bhd. This group, managed by 48 Entertainment with the blessing of Superball Inc., the licensor for AKB48’s overseas sister groups, is set to make waves on the international stage.
Not only is KLP48 the latest addition to the AKB48 family, but it also holds the distinction of being Malaysia’s first-ever all-girl idol group aimed at global audiences. The group’s diverse first-generation lineup features 13 talented individuals: 7 Malaysians, 4 Japanese, one Indonesian, and one member from Hong Kong, China. This eclectic mix includes three members transferred from AKB48 and one from STU48, another of Japan’s prominent sister groups.
Nariaki Terada, CEO of Superball Inc. and General Producer of AKB48’s overseas sister groups, expressed his excitement about this new chapter, saying, “Welcoming KLP48’s first-generation members is a thrilling moment that showcases the ever-expanding global influence of the AKB48 brand. We are eager to see KLP48 step into the spotlight and begin their journey.”
KLP48 joins the ranks of AKB48’s nine other overseas sister groups, including JKT48 in Jakarta, BNK48 in Bangkok, MNL48 in Manila, AKB48 Team SH in Shanghai, AKB48 Team TP in Taipei, and CGM48 in Chiang Mai.
Yip Chun Huei, Director of 48 Entertainment Sdn Bhd, commented on the group’s formation, stating, “AKB48 and its sister groups have long been embraced by fans in Malaysia. We are confident that KLP48 will receive the same passionate support. The members have been working tirelessly, and we have some exciting plans in store, so stay tuned!”
True to AKB48 tradition, each sister group is distinguished by its unique color. KLP48 has been assigned green, inspired by the Malaysian jade, symbolizing a blend of gentle energy, empathy, and a fusion of diverse values.
On August 18th, KLP48 will make their debut alongside AKB48, STU48, JKT48, and QUADLIPS at the AKB48 Group Live in KL 2024 ~ First Cry ~ concert.
AKB48, named after their iconic Akihabara theater in Tokyo, was created by renowned music producer Yasushi Akimoto in 2005. The group’s revolutionary concept of ‘idols you can meet’ through daily theater performances has garnered them a massive following, even earning them a Guinness World Record as the Largest Pop Group in the World.
