The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), operating under the Ministry of Digital, has initiated a nationwide campaign to accelerate the digital transformation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with the northern state of Penang being its first focus.
This new initiative, designed to equip SMEs with the necessary tools, expertise, and support to embrace digitalisation and thrive in the digital economy, was officially launched today by the Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo.
The campaign includes a special engagement program with SME associations based in Penang, hosted at the newly inaugurated Ministry of Digital’s Zon Utara Office in George Town.
The program is tailored to address the specific challenges faced by Penang’s industries in adopting and scaling digital transformation. It aims to co-develop practical solutions alongside stakeholders, foster a supportive ecosystem for digital enterprises, facilitate dialogues on best practices, and strengthen partnerships to accelerate digital innovation and adoption among the SME community.
Speaking at the event, MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil emphasised the importance of viewing technology as an investment for growth and competitiveness.
“In today’s fast-changing landscape, technology is no longer an option—it is essential. By leveraging digital tools and innovative solutions, SMEs can improve their efficiency, expand their reach, and strengthen their resilience in the global market while achieving higher productivity and operational efficiencies,” Anuar stated.
He further reiterated MDEC’s commitment to empowering SMEs with practical digital solutions to enhance their competitiveness and productivity.
This program reflects the Ministry and MDEC’s dedication to fostering a thriving digital economy that benefits businesses and citizens alike. In Penang alone, RM30.96 million has been awarded to recipients of the Malaysia Digital (MD) grant, with 173 companies in the state already achieving MD status.
“We are eager to see more companies attain MD status, driving greater innovation and creating a clear pathway for enhanced growth and competitiveness,” Anuar added.
The Malaysia Digital (MD) status program provides substantial benefits to businesses involved in digital and technological activities, including tax incentives, grants, funding opportunities, business matching, and access to robust networks.
To encourage more companies to achieve MD status, the Ministry plans to launch a new initiative soon. This program will help SMEs enhance efficiency and lower operational costs by up to 20% through customised digital solutions that address their unique business challenges.
“This effort involves identifying the specific pain points of businesses and offering targeted digital solutions aligned with their operational goals and industry requirements,” explained Anuar.
The event was attended by Penang’s Deputy Chief Minister II, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo A/L Karpal Singh, Digital Penang CEO YBrs Ts. Kwang Ming Ng, and other leaders from Penang’s SME associations.
