KAO Malaysia & Universiti Malaya Join Forces to Promote Skin Health Innovation

KAO Malaysia, through its leading skincare brand Bioré, has officially partnered with Universiti Malaya (UM) to advance science-backed skin health initiatives in Malaysia. The collaboration was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant milestone in bridging academic research with industry expertise to promote public health through skincare education and innovation.

As part of this partnership, KAO Malaysia has contributed RM50,000 to support two flagship initiatives led by UM. The first, a community engagement programme titled “Beautiful Change Begins with Us” managed by Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), focuses on raising hygiene awareness, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting positive mental wellness among teenagers, adults, and children. The second initiative involves a research project titled “Innovative Clean Skincare Formulations for Skin Protection and Healthy Living” spearheaded by the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, which aims to develop advanced clean skincare solutions for long-term health benefits.

“This partnership reflects KAO’s commitment to going beyond product innovation to create meaningful, science-driven impact in the communities we serve,” said Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia. “Skin protection is not just a matter of personal care, but a public health responsibility. Together with Universiti Malaya, we are proud to drive this vision forward for the benefit of all Malaysians.”

The MoU represents KAO Malaysia’s first academic collaboration with a Malaysian institution. Guided by the shared vision of “Skin Protection, Life Perfection”, the partnership combines KAO’s expertise in skincare innovation with UM’s research leadership to foster greater awareness and real-world solutions in skin health. With additional funding and resources, Universiti Malaya will expand its community outreach efforts and advance research in sustainable skincare practices for long-term societal benefits.

Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Director of UM Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This MoU marks an important step in strengthening the bridge between science and society. Through this collaboration, we can transform research into impactful solutions that not only improve skincare but also enhance community well-being.”

The MoU was officially signed by Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia, and Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, with Watsons Malaysia witnessing the ceremony. A symbolic donation handover was also held to signify the shared commitment of all parties towards advancing skin health research and education in Malaysia.

Launched in May 2025 in partnership with Watsons, the “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” campaign has already reached nationwide audiences through expert education, engaging consumer experiences, and a 1% sales donation initiative. Moving forward, the strengthened collaboration between KAO Malaysia and Universiti Malaya sets the foundation for long-term progress in skincare research and community health awareness.
