Samsung Galaxy S25 Series: A Leap Towards a Sustainable Future

Samsung continues to make waves in the tech world, not only through innovative devices but also through its commitment to a more sustainable future. At the recent Galaxy Tech Forum held on January 23, 2025, in San Jose, California, the company unveiled its ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its mobile technology. One of the major highlights was the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, set to launch with groundbreaking features that place environmental responsibility at the forefront.

Paving the Way for Sustainable Mobile Technology

Samsung’s vision for sustainability takes shape with the launch of the Galaxy S25 series, with an emphasis on creating products that benefit both users and the planet. Daniel Araujo, Head of Sustainability Management at Samsung Electronics, shared exciting news during the event about the company’s commitment to product circularity. The S25 series will feature at least 50% recycled cobalt, a first for the brand. Additionally, for the very first time, the batteries in the S25 models will incorporate recycled cobalt sourced from used Galaxy smartphones, marking another step in reducing waste and promoting resource efficiency.

Samsung’s advancements in sustainable materials go beyond the batteries. Since the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung has already incorporated over 150 tonnes of discarded fishing nets into its products. These nets, which are equivalent to 15 million plastic water bottles, demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to reducing ocean-bound plastic waste. The company’s continued effort to incorporate recycled materials into its devices underscores the importance of developing technology that is not only user-friendly but also environmentally responsible.

Leveraging Technology for Marine Ecosystem Restoration

One of the key environmental initiatives highlighted during the forum was Samsung’s partnership with Seatrees, a non-profit dedicated to coral reef restoration. Using mobile technology, including the new Ocean Mode camera feature on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung is aiding in the restoration of vital marine ecosystems. Dr. Stuart Sandin, Professor at the University of California San Diego, highlighted the critical role coral reefs play in sustaining marine life and protecting coastal communities. By using smartphones to capture high-quality underwater photography, Samsung and Seatrees are able to collect valuable data to map and restore coral reefs effectively.

The collaboration also showcases how mobile technology can enhance environmental conservation efforts. Through accessible, user-friendly devices, Samsung is helping to create tools for marine scientists, activists, and organizations to monitor, analyze, and protect endangered ecosystems.

Empowering Future Generations for Global Change

Beyond its environmental initiatives, Samsung is also making significant strides in empowering future leaders. The company’s partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) led to the creation of the Samsung Global Goals app and the Generation17 initiative, which supports young leaders working toward the Global Goals. Tamara Gondo, CEO of Liberty Society and a Generation17 Young Leader, spoke about the opportunity the program provided to access resources and gain global recognition for her work in upskilling marginalized women.

Samsung continues to encourage young innovators by providing them with the platform and resources to bring their ideas to life. This commitment to fostering change through education, innovation, and collaboration is helping to shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for the next generation.
