Penang Media Embarks on Chennai Tour to Elevate Tourism and Cultural Exchange

In a significant move to enhance tourism and cultural ties between Penang and Chennai, a delegation of 11 media organizations from Penang embarked on a media familiarization trip to Chennai, India, from March 3rd to 5th, 2025. This initiative coincides with the launch of IndiGo Airlines’ direct flight route connecting the two destinations, a development expected to boost cross-border tourism and economic exchanges.

The primary goal of this media trip is to generate awareness and interest among Penangites in Chennai as a dynamic travel destination. By highlighting Chennai’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant cityscape, and unique travel experiences, the initiative seeks to sustain demand for the direct flight route and encourage greater exploration between the regions.

As part of their itinerary, the delegation visited Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient rock-cut temples and intricate sculptures that narrate India’s deep historical legacy. They also explored Chennai’s bustling urban landscape, where modernity and tradition seamlessly blend, as well as Kanchipuram, a city renowned for its grand temples and traditional silk weaving industry.

‘The Penang State Government fully supports this initiative as part of our commitment to maintaining direct connectivity with Chennai,’ stated YB Wong Yuee Harng, Director of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau. ‘This media trip plays a vital role in expanding travel opportunities while fostering stronger economic and cultural relationships between our two destinations.

Echoing this sentiment, Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative. ‘Through extensive media exposure, we aim to heighten awareness of Chennai’s diverse tourism offerings, ensuring the long-term success of this direct flight. Additionally, this effort paves the way for deeper collaborations in tourism and business, aligning with Penang’s broader vision of expanding its presence in key markets.

This initiative also aligns with Penang’s long-term tourism strategy, which focuses on enhancing regional connectivity and driving economic benefits through increased travel and cultural exchange. By spotlighting Chennai as an attractive travel destination, the media trip not only fosters tourism but also solidifies Penang’s position as a premier hub for both business and leisure travelers.
