In a significant move towards strengthening Malaysia’s workforce and enhancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) has partnered with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. This collaboration aims to harness advanced technology and public-private partnerships to produce skilled human capital that meets the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.
At the heart of this partnership is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Human Resources Minister (KESUMA) YB Steven Sim Chee Keong and Huawei Malaysia. This agreement focuses on integrating high-tech infrastructure and transferring knowledge in advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), 5G networks, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), into Malaysia’s TVET ecosystem.
The initiative will begin with the establishment of the first TVET Huawei Learning Centre at the Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Kuala Lumpur. This center is expected to offer Huawei-certified courses delivered by certified instructors, focusing initially on telecommunications technologies and equipment.
The first cohort of 2,000 trainees, including industry engineers, new employees, and TVET educators, will benefit from a combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on training using Huawei equipment. Successful participants will earn certifications that enhance their employability and open pathways to high-value roles in the ICT sector.
The collaboration also envisions the establishment of additional TVET Huawei Learning Centres at various JTM Training Institutions, offering training in emerging technologies that are crucial for future industries. These modules will include AI, IoT, cloud computing, and more, reinforcing Malaysia’s position in the global digital landscape.
Minister Sim emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the skills training sector, stating that world-class TVET institutions are essential for equipping Malaysians with skills relevant to the 21st century. By leveraging Huawei’s expertise in ICT, the partnership aims to enhance the capabilities of TVET institutions and align with the National TVET Policy 2030’s strategic objectives.
Huawei Malaysia’s CEO, Mr. Simon Sun, highlighted the importance of nurturing talent as a strategic asset. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with JTM to share valuable experiences and empower Malaysian students with in-demand skills amid ongoing digital transformation.
As part of this partnership, Huawei Malaysia will upgrade the network infrastructure of JTM Training Institutions, starting with ILP Pasir Gudang and its Senai Campus. Plans include the implementation of smart classrooms and campuses equipped with high-speed 5G and Wi-Fi 7 technologies, as well as establishing data centres to enhance training delivery and operational efficiency.
These upgrades will facilitate remote learning, hybrid teaching modes, and access to extensive online educational resources, ultimately transforming the learning experience for students. Additionally, the collaboration aims to explore AI-powered customer experience management solutions, further preparing students for the demands of a digital economy.
This partnership signifies a strategic step towards advancing Malaysia’s digital aspirations and building a resilient, competitive workforce. The MoU was ceremoniously signed at the Malaysia-China Summit 2024, following discussions between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Huawei’s leadership regarding Malaysia’s digital future.
With the commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into TVET, Malaysia is poised to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of thriving in the global economy, ultimately driving the nation’s growth and innovation.
